I only had a 750 character limit to work with. Here is the descriptions of the jobs that I have held during my college years:
Name of Employer: Kalypsys, Inc
Position Title: Vivarium Assistant
Description:
Kalypsys is a pharmaceutical company that specializes in the testing of clinical stage drugs. I was hired as a Vivarium Assistant—a position that involved the animal husbandry of mice and rats. I ensured optimal research conditions for the scientists’ experiments by reducing as many variables as possible. I worked with many strains of mice including the C57BL/6 (wild-type), BALB/C (albino), OB (obese), and DB mouse (diabetic). In addition to basic research skills, I learned a great deal about the pharmaceutical drug pipeline—knowledge that will help as a physician. Unfortunately after about a month and a half, the economic troubles during the fall of 2008 greatly hurt Kalypsys, and I was laid off.
Name of Employer: The Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO)- UCSD
Position Title: Laboratory Assistant III
Description:
I joined the William Gerwick Lab at SIO in the Spring of 2009. This lab specializes in the extraction and chemistry of natural products in algae. With a group of graduate students, I worked in a study using small molecules to elicit the increase neutral lipids in a strain of microalgae for the purpose of biofuel development. I also partnered with General Atomics, a government defense company, as a visiting scientist. While working at the lab I have learned many biochemical techniques, and have also earned a total of $3,000 grant money to fund my research. I presented the group’s research at the 2010 UCSD Undergraduate Research Conference. I will also be a co-author of a study that will be submitted for publication in the summer of 2010.
